Capital accounts are part of the balance sheet of a business under the owner’s equity section.

Capital accounts can be different depending on the type of business entity.

For example, a sole proprietorship has only one capital account for the owner. In a partnership, each partner has separate capital accounts, showing their individual contributions, withdrawals, and share of profits or losses. In a corporation, there are no capital accounts for the shareholders; instead, common stock and retained earnings accounts reflect the shareholders’ equity.

What are Capital Accounts in accounting?

What are the examples of Capital Accounts?

Owner’s capital: This account tracks how much the owners have invested in the business. For example, if a business owner invests $10,000 in the business, the owner’s capital account would be credited with $10,000.

Retained earnings: This account tracks the profits reinvested in the business. For example, if a business earns a profit of $10,000 and then reinvests $5,000 of the profit in the business, the retained earnings account would be credited with $5,000.

Partnership capital accounts: Partnership capital accounts track the ownership interest of the partners in a partnership. For example, if a partnership has two partners, each partner would have their own capital account. The account balance would represent the partner’s share of the partnership’s assets.

Send Unlimited Invoices – Try Akaunting Invoicing Software.

Corporate capital accounts: Corporate capital accounts track the ownership interest of the shareholders in a corporation.
