You may be eligible for contributory Employment and Support Allowance if you have paid or been credited with enough National Insurance contributions in the last two to three years. When you first claim, you’ll usually get the ‘assessment rate’ for 13 weeks while your claim is being assessed.

Income-based Employment and Support Allowance is based on your income and savings and can only be claimed along with Universal Credit. ESA is a benefit for people who are unable to work because of a disability or health condition. PIP is a benefit for people who have difficulty with daily living or getting around because of a disability or health condition.

What is the difference between ESA and new style ESA?

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is a form of financial and work-related assistance for individuals who suffer from a disability or health condition that impedes their ability to work. There are two types of ESA: old-style and new-style.

Old-style ESA payments are granted and disbursed separately from Universal Credit and may be either contributory or income-based.

The Universal Credit system awards and pays new-style ESA, which is only contributory. This type of ESA is unaffected by your income or savings, but it may reduce your Universal Credit payment by the same amount. It is important to note that new-style ESA is not means-tested but is taxable, while income-based ESA is means-tested and not taxable.

Can I claim benefits if I leave my job due to ill health UK?

It is possible for you to receive benefits in the UK if you leave your job due to health issues.
