I have added payments into the purchases category and i have noticed that non of the payments are displaying on the total expenses dashboard...am i missing something here?

The cashflow widget seems not to include Expenses either.

I did some debugging over the last few days. It would appear that the payments (expenses) for the current month will not show until the start of the following month (so if you had some charges during June, make a manual selection between May and July). I think it's a bug that needs to be reported on their Github page, though on my setup, expenses finally started showing up, though again, not for the current month.
If you are importing bills that accrued before the current month (or last year as it is in my case), when you mark the invoice or bill as paid, make sure that the payment day is not the "current day", but the day you paid the bill. A first, I was marking bills as paid without giving too much attention to the modal (wrong). After changing the payment day to the correct one, the expenses finally started showing up.
