UDI Code Batch and Lot handling

We are are wondering if anyone has taken on UDI batch/lot coding (warehousing, shipping, invoicing etc) and "won." On the surface of it, it looks like the answer is "no" and we'd be in for a bunch of customisation (fields and app code). But... I am hoping that I could get a more realistic idea of the challenge and solutions.

Is this related to the inventory app, or what?

Yes, but it also will affect the main item list afaics.
Custom fields and the like, as well as custom printing of the UDI codes.

I'd not prefer having this in the core — 99% of users don't need it.
