Installation missteps

1. The installation requirements are missing a bunch of things, like php-mysql, but this nothing huge.
2. The installation stalls out on the admin screen, yet when I look the database tables seem to have been created. Not sure what it is doing.
On my point 2, I see other people have experienced this, but there is no remedy I can see being posted.
So... Help!

+1 here for the 2nd point, I am also experiencing difficulties with installing it on our NAS.

I think the issue is the database permissions you give the database user. Not had the chance to experiment further, but I have "in the meantime" solved the problem by using MySQL's root user as the database user. Not exactly good form, but it is an experiment at the moment.
