Mail settings (SMTP) stored in dabase base or env. file?

In the env. file you have the following:

MAIL_DRIVER=mail
MAIL_HOST=localhost
MAIL_PORT=2525
MAIL_USERNAME=null
MAIL_PASSWORD=null
MAIL_ENCRYPTION=null

Is that no longer used and the settings is stored in the database instead?

I just reinstalled the whole system and entered the SMTP settings but the settings in the env. file is not updated.

Should I update the env. file with the SMTP details manually or it is all good? Thanks.
